Office of Energy Independence

Achieving 25 x 25Governor Jim Doyle
In July 2006, Governor Jim Doyle made an historic announcement, the “Declaration of Energy Independence” which charts a new course for clean energy in Wisconsin. A few months later, in April of 2007, Governor Doyle issued Executive Order 192 creating the Office of Energy Independence (OEI) to lead the state’s effort to advance clean energy and bioproducts. This was the beginning of an effort to become the nation’s leader in the drive toward energy independence, moving us away from our addiction on foreign oil.

The OEI is committed to supporting Wisconsin's goal of generating 25% of its electric power and transportation fuels from renewable resources by 2025, capturing 10% of the emerging bioindustry and renewable energy market by 2030, and leading the nation in groundbreaking research that will make clean energy more affordable and will create good paying Wisconsin jobs.

The Office of Energy Independence will partner with individual communities to increase their use of clean energy, maximize energy efficiency, and capitalize on their unique resources to become more energy independent.  This partnership, the first of its kind in the nation, embraces the approaches and solutions that communities are currently exploring. Energy Independent Communities will decide on strategies based on their unique assets and how they will capitalize on the diversity of their resources. WP&L (Alliant Energy) has issued a Request for Information to the public in order to gather information on growing, harvesting, processing and delivering biomass fuel for its proposed Nelson Dewey 3 power plant project in Cassville (Grant County), WI.  The deadline for submitting information on this Request is April 18, 2008.

The purpose of this Request for Information (RFI) is to determine interest and capability levels of existing agricultural, forestry and other businesses or organizations to meet the fuel needs of NED 3 and to begin the process of creating long-term aggregator/processor/supplier networks for NED 3.

Interested persons should click here and follow the instructions or contact Bill Johnson at Alliant Energy (609)  742-0824.

2007 Wisconsin Energy Statistics

In 2006, Wisconsin spent almost $19.5 billion on energy - a new record.  To reduce our dependence on imported energy, Governor Doyle committed the state to the goal of 25x25 to develop Wisconsin's energy resources.  The Wisconsin Office of Energy Independence is working to make the 25x25 goals a reality, and the Wisconsin Energy Statistics will document our progress.
